Motanamotors thread on the 'wooden Soviet wunder' got me thinking about what motor one would put in a replica SE5a?

Any suggestions?

Hi, Wuzak,

thank you for the roses. I would choose a de-rated 503 Marathon for that purpose, as offered by www.team-38.com (for picture see also: "wooden soviet wonder").

Because:

1. Liquid-cooled like the real McCoy.
2. V8 like the real McCoy.
3. Readily adapted to aviation use and ready to install.
4. May be used with or without reduction gear like the real Mccoy.
5. Power-output at will - from 150 HP to 500 HP - pick a choice.
6. Even more reliable as a car engine - no primabellerina.
7. Engine, parts and service instantly availlable from manufacturer.
8. Wheight as well as bulk probably close to the original.

Again: See picture.

Cheers!

Wuzak sent you roses montana? :D [8D]

Looks like it is based on a Chevy 350. Why the cast iron block when aluminum blocks are available?

H-S engines were of 11.8l capacity. Dimensions are ~32" x ~34".

Wuzak, Kutscha - to know you both is to love you both... :D

Kutscha, there are both options availlable: Marathon 350 based on small-block-Chevy, Marathon 503 based on the big-block-Chevy.

Team P38 use cast iron blocks only, for stability-reasons. Read their FAQ's (NOT F***'s!) for further details:
http://www.team-38.com/engine_faq.html#Why%20do%20you%20use%20cast%20iron

I'd ALWAYS prefer the big block in aircraft. You neet DISPLACEMENT to assure TORQUE. Besides that, many WWI-reprlica planes have problems with their center of gravity, as usually modern engines are TOO LIGHT to secure a proper CofG. The 503 would "alleviate", if not annihilate this problem, for shure.

The Se5a's original Wolseley Viper engine was a licence-bult Hispano-Suiza V8, type Ab. It featured 11,76 Liters of displacement and gave 180 HP at 2100 rpm with 230 kgs of wheight.

German Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispano-Suiza_8

Sorry, but this one is much more fruitious than the english version:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispano-Suiza_8

NOTMYFAULT!!!!!

The Marathon with 502 cu.in. has 8,2 L of displacement, wheighs in at about the identical wheigt as the Wolseley Viper/Hispano Suizza V8 does and, can easily be de-tuned to deliver 180 HP at 2100 rpm from it's stock 510 HP at 4800 rpm, also.

This would basically be done by simply grinding down the cam lobes to reduce valve lift so much that, it will match the desired power-output and RPM, 180 HP and, 2100 rpm, respectively.

That's all that would be needed. I am shure, Team P38 would gladly respond to a request regarding that.

Btw: The Marathon 502 can even be converted to REVERSE rotation. This is most imporant to building a decent SE5a-replica, as this aircraft featured a geared, four-bladed-prop turning CCW pilot's view, while the antecessor, the 150 HP SE5, had a non-geared, two-bladed-prop turning CW-pilot's view.

I have the honour to be your everlasting big-mouthed smart-ass,

You have me confused monatana as I don't see a 503, only the 502. Besides the Marathon 350 that is.

The 502 looks like the crate engine hot rodders put in their cars.

YEP! It is the 502. Sorry. BUT it is definitely NOT a crate engine - but MUCH, MUCH more.

Please read the websites FAQ's closely and check the entire website for further information.

You must check all the pic's for further links, too. The architecture of the webpage is somewhat puzzling, but the content is nonetheless great stuff.

Yes I read the 'read me'.

Maybe I should have said based on the 502 crate engine.

Now you're on. I think that, this 502-baby is worth every buck - once you're up 10000ft in a steep climb close to minimum speed, you'll understand my enchantment...

Cheers!
