Hey guys....
If you had to build an aircraft from WW2 which was either a) a paper design, b) only made it to prototype status or c) was only made in small numbers (say less than 20) before it was dropped from production, what would it be?
Assume that you have access to any engine you require, or plans of them, and more than sufficient funding to design (if required), build and test the airplane.
My list would include:
Supermarine Type 327. I think that Supermarine's design philosophy was demonstrated by the Spitfire, and the structure of the 327 was to be very similar to the Spitfire. I would start out equipping it with Merlin 45s, which would have been the likely engine for a probableproduction date. Not long after the two stage Merlins became available, so I would then replace the 45s with 61s for the 327 MkII.
McDonnell XP-67. Every time I look at a picture of this plane I say "wow". Hopefully the detail drawings are still about to make one. Firstly I would equip it with turbocharged Allisons, same as the contemporary P-38, then I would put in a pair of Merlin 61s, and finally try out the V-1710-119 - the turbocompound version.
Dornier P.252. I love this twin engined, swept wing pusher night fighter. I'd probably go for the P.252/3 version. I'd try both the Jumo 213s and the equivalent DBs (DB603?).

Ta-152 Lang Nasse (sp?) of course with the inline Junker Jumo!
Then I'd proceed to shoot down the remaining P-51s!

Slightly more built than 20....hence not really in my scope.

OK then, the Sanger Interpoidal Bomber!
How's that for a 'garage' project? Exotic enough?! He, he, he!

Wrong question, Wuzak. For me, it is hard to say which WWII project I would NOT build. OK, two directions:
All German suicide jet microplanes, I hate that thought. Correspondingly I would convert the Yokosuka Okha into a craft retrievable by the motherplane.
And, sorry, Trexx, the Sänger glider. Even for means of today it is technologically impossible to realize.
Of course, I also would add projects basing on my personal considerations, like the hydroplane-fighter...[8)]

Sorry RT....I guess you could tell us the first few you'd tackle.

An easy one for me.
The Bell XP-39 Airacobra with the originally specified "got-dam" turbo-supercharger for the Allison V-1710.
Before the Army Air Corps got ahold of it, chopped two feet off the wings, added a foot to it's overall length and destroyed it's potential be be America's best pre-war single-engined fighter.
Instead, the USAAC gave us what became known as the "Iron Dog."

I'll take that under advisement... [B)]

Well, guess!
Ambrosini SAI 403 Dardo, of course!

But as the plans of which are hard to get by, an SAI 207 would do just fine:

But as the plans of which are hard to get by, an SAI S.7 Supersette would do just fine:

But as the plans of which are hard to get by, a Barracuda with a beefed-up engine (maybe a 550 HP-Ranger 770...?) would do just fine:

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n149/montanamotor/Barracuda%20pics/Ranger1.jpg
But as a Ranger 770 is hard to get by, a Barracuda with a Moravia LOM 337 250 HP inline-six with mechanical compressor would do just fine:

But if all this still didn't work out to get me airborne one fine day, I'd call my colleague from the workshop, sweet Norma Jean Baker and ask her for a date:

- and after that, I'll invite her to meet me at home and - after a drink or two - to lend me a hand to swing my club...

Cheers! :D[:p][:I][:o)]
