I remember him very well from TV when he was General in the 70s. He had a fine style that doesn´t exist any more today. And I never saw a picture of him as a young Knight´s Cross wearer. What astonishes me and makes me a little proud is that his uninjured face looks a bit like my own one...

Met him once in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.

An impressive individual with honor and dignity. He was interested in fighters and aircraft, not politics. At the meeting, he was asked about the Nazis.

As I recall, his response was to the effect that Hitler offered a return to prosperity after the War Reparation Clauses in the treaty of Versaille, and that's why he was voted in. By the time everyone figured out the magnitude of their mistake, it was too late since the Nazis were already in power and had the upper hand everywhere, especially with food and basic supplies for living. So, you couldn't really fight them or you'd quickly run out of food to live.

The altrernative was to fight for them, which almost everyone did in order to survive.

He made no excuses, and assigned no blame to the victors. He said the balme rested on Germany, and that was where it belonged.

He got a standing ovation.
