From Bill Gunston’s ‘The development of jet and turbine aero engines’

One F.2/4 (Metrovick) was fitted with a two-stage open propfan to give an engine identical in layout to the American GE UDF of over 40 years later, but nobody was interested.

Would earlier demonstrations of propfans make any difference to any other programme?

Hi PMN1,

Yes it would have been a huge benefit to German and possibly Japanese projects of the period. Think about an Arado so equipped.

The XB-42 Mixmaster could have used the idea to good effect

A Miles jet bomber Libellula variant would have made a interesting aircraft

At a latter date a Canberra variant would also make an interesting comparison
