Howdy Gents,
I'm working on an article for a wargame magazine. I'm finding it difficult to come up with a good OOB for the Luftwaffe and the Regia Aeronautica for the periods June 1942 to mid-Dec. 1943. This data itself isn't part of the article, rather I need to analyze it for a few things to determine relative capabilities in specific periods. Does anyone have this info?
Also looking for industrial & military target info in Spain ....probable targets had Spain entered the war.
Many Thanks,
Tom Cundiff

Howdy Tom,
register yourself on www.comandosupremo.com. Proceed to the forums and ask your question. They know everything, at least everything mediterranean.
By incident, somebody asks for the OOB of the Regia Aeronautica in July/August 1943:

What are you exactly researching/writing about?

Some many years back Avalon Hill Game Co. created a solotaire game called "B17 Queen of the Skies". The game focused itself upon the 8th AF raids on Europe in 1943. A couple of years went by and a man by the name of Cirelli wrote an article for the magazine "The General" called "The 15th Air Force in B-17". Well, I have compiled all of the necessary target data, allied fighter strength numbers, and enlisted the aid of a friend to help with the graphics, to do yet another extension for the game. This one is to be called "Bombing The Med. The 9th and 12th Air Forces in North Africa and Italy". (Incidentally I've also been trying to gather target data for Spain for a possible "What If" article.) Anyway, the only thing left for me to do is analyze the data regarding the strength levels of the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica for the periods June 1942 to Dec. 8, 1943 (the date of the last 15th AF mission flown from bases in Tunisia before everyone moved to Foggia).
I've obtained some sketchy info on the Lufwaffe in the period in question (bases used, number of fighters and types for June 42 to Aug. 42).
Thanks for the heads up regarding "Commando Supremo", I had discovered their site, and even gathered some info there. But to tell you the truth, I hadn't been able to discern if they were a hard history type of site, or a computer game site such as those for Aces High. And what info existed wasn't exactly organized well enough for me to be certain of understanding what they were trying to present. There's an OOB listed there for the period in question, but it doesn't tell me (or if it does I can't tell) what units were based where, or what type of aircraft the specific units that are listed used.
Didn't realize they had a forum, so I guess I'll have to go check that out.
Thanks,
Tom

OOB = Order Of Battle, basically the troops and equipment available to an armed force in any given area at any given time.
RAF, USAAF, USAAC, RAAF, USN, FAA, we all use abbreviations...!

I posted to Commando Supremo, but no luck. On person had a small amount of information that might maybe perhaps have been sort of accurate for a small operation during the period in question. Other than that no joy.
Same for all of the other forum's I posted to that discuss either the air wars or the Med.

I have seen that their answers are quite disappointing. For the Luftwaffe, here Luftflotte 2, I offer you the following link:

Itīs complicated because subunits are moved from here to there, but possibly you can find out something.

Comandosupremo has an OOB for the Regia Aeronautica in North Africa 1942:

Maybe you can fill the gaps to your request by and by.

Thank you both, I have both of those. The German one is confusing to say the least. The Italian one gives you the name of units but no strengths. The German information is the better of the two, the Italian one is quite useless without the unit strengths.
I've asked the local library to try to obtain some books for me. I'm guessing I'll have to wait on those, if indeed they can obtain them.
