If the Avro 679 Manchester/Vulture combination and the twin engined HP56 Halifax had been successful, would they have been developed into the Lancaster and 4 engined Halifax to replace the Stirling and Supermarine’s designs for B.12/36 or would the RAF have made do with the 8,000lb bombload of the P.13/36 specification to replace them?

Could the Manchester ever have been a good aircraft with say Griffin, Centaurus or Sabre (when its problems had been sorted) engines or was it too big for a twin engined aircraft?

Generally, a twin-engined aircraft has better flight characteristics than a four-engined one because the masses ar placed closer to the aircraft´s gravity center. But it is safer to use four engines rather than two, especially for a warplane. The success of the four-engined bombers, in my eyes, blocked the future for any advanced heavy two-engined design.
