On 26 May, 1944, elements of 5th Wing / Fifteenth Air Force attacked the marshalling yards of St Etienne in France as part of the Transport Operation leading up to D-Day. I am researching this mission because my French wife lost family during the bombardment. Does anyone know more? Are there any vets out there - on the ground or in the air - who can tell me more? I'm particularly interested fighter cover (provided by the 31st Fighter Group) and the complete lack of German response - no A/C were lost due to enemy action, and I can't figure out why.
