World War II Aviation Discussion board about World War II Aviation (airplanes, pilots, battles, campaigns and related topics). The timeframe of discussion should be 1939-1945, but this is not strict. Use your head.

Default P-38 fuel

It looks like it was American fuel that caused problems for the P-38 and not British fuel.

An altogether scathing indictment of the unilateral decision made, it it is true.

I'd have to verify that with something more authoritative than a game board, though. In all the other period stuff I have, the document ID is clearly stated on most pages, particularly the signature page, and here it is conspicuously missing.

Still, it gives us a place to start looking ...

You will find Greg that that board has a fanatical membership when it comes to official documentation being required. Even Oleg Maddox will only accept official documentation.

who defines "official"???? I've seen some boards, and yes some pro-US boards, that will only velieve their own country's primary sources. I remember starting a thread awhile back showing some criticism of the Spitfire Performance website's selectivity in posting documents.
IMHO though regardless of who provided the fuel the P-38 suffered for it.

As a member in here who is currently working with people flying a P-38, I can tell you that the P-38, in WWII, was forced to fly on fuel not intended for it.

This post is the FIRST proof I've ever seen of it, and it comes from the U.S.A., where I live. That makes me wonder where this document came from.

As I said, it gives me a place to start looking, but the source of this document would certainly help.

Even if not forthcoming, it STILL gives me a palce to start asking the pilots of the P-38 what THEY think.

I'll DO THAT and report back ... in due time.

I am NOT saying this is a bogus document, I AM saying I have never seen or heard of this before, but it DOES go a long way to explaining things the P-39's experienced in Europe about that time. Seems kind of ... convenient, huh? That does NOT make it false ... it gives me a place to start.

Again, thanks! Really. :-)

Ah Greg, the documentation is British so would be from the The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 4DU. Tel: +44 (0) 20 8876 3444.
